There is almost nothing available beyond standard teaching methods for Christian drummers and percussionists to develop a Bible based understanding for their skills. Thirty years ago drums were very rare in any kind of church - nowadays thousands of churches in Britain and beyond have a drummer or percussionist playing in the worship team. A Heart to Drum is a timely resource which aims to bring the drummer/percussionist into a true biblical understanding for their gift.

Terl Bryant writes from a wealth of experience having played professionally in both the Christian and mainstream music industries for many years. He is the founder of ‘Psalm Drummers’ (established 1996), which gathers drummers for events and serves to release believing drummers in their gifts. His credits include touring and recording with John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Iona, Matt Redman, Faith Hill, the Honeyz, Leslie Garrett, Maddy Prior and many many more. The book cover designs ties in with the succesful Survivor emerge release 'Psalm Drummers'.

Let’s be abandoned to complete obedience and discover together the groove of eternity. God’s heartbeat! - Terl Bryant

Reviewed by Chris Tozer

Terl Bryant is eminently qualified to write this, the very first Christian perspective on percussion. Over the past 25 years he has played drums with a wide variety of mainstream artists including Rick Wakeman, Cliff Richard and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. He has also played with virtually every professional Christian musician in Britain including a stint with the Celtic band Iona. He's played at countless special events including the enthronement of the current Archbishop of York and established Psalm Drummers, an organisation that unites 200 percussionists in 10 countries across the globe. With drummers now playing in an ever-increasing number of churches each Sunday this teaching manual is clearly long overdue. Terl certainly does an effective job of summarizing what the Bible has to say about percussion as an instrument of praise. Over 11 chapters he examines a wide range of subjects including Role Models And Influences, and Personal Preparation And Application. In an age where every product is promoted as a "must have" I hesitate to trot out the well-worn catch phrase, but undeniably, every Christian drummer from beginner to professional ought to read this book. It will provide them with encouraging anecdotes and Biblical teaching that will serve them well as they "praise Him on the loud cymbal."
