Angels and Israel

Continued from page 3

Inspired by God, he'd won a great victory over 950 false prophets; 450 of them were prophets of Baal and 400 of them were prophets of a goddess.

God had honoured Elijah's great faith by sending down fire from heaven and consuming the offering made by Elijah. This made Israel shout, 'The Lord Jehovah he is God. The Lord is God!'

Now this infuriated the Queen who'd introduced this false satanic religion. Her name was Jezebel. Elijah was a real he-man; he feared no man and very few women - but Jezebel was one of the few women he did fear. He was victorious over 950 men but when Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah ran for cover. Sometimes a surprising setback after victory has that effect on you. Elijah was exhausted in body and in mind.

He lay down under a tall evergreen tree and fell into a deep sleep. It was then that God showed a deep tenderness to his champion. 1 Kings 19:5 says, 'An angel came and touched him, woke him up and said, "Sit up and eat!"' Yes, it was an angel of the Lord! 'Sit up and eat,' he said.

Elijah looked and on a hot stone near his head was a delicious cake still warm after baking and a jar of water. Elijah was ravenous and gorged the lot, and then fell into a deep sleep, unconscious of time.

The angel came again, touched him and pointed to more food that gave him amazing strength. This enabled him to make the long journey back to God.
