In 1997 5% of year 7 boys were smoking regularly, compared with 3% of girls. By year 8, the trend had reversed, with around 9% of boys and 12% of girls smoking. By year 10, around 24% of boys and 37% of girls were addicted to the habit.

In 1982, 26% of males aged 15-16 were regular smokers, compared to 28% of girls. In 2001, those figures had fallen to 19% and 25% respectively.

More English 15 year-old girls smoke than in almost any other country in the world. Only the 15 year-old girls of Greenland smoke more.
