Ninety per cent of children who leave primary school in low-income countries are not expected to read or do basic maths, a new report from the Department for International Development (DFID) says. Globally, most children now have access to basic education, and, in 2015, 17 per cent of spending in low-income countries and 16 per cent in lower-middle-income countries went to education. But it is estimated that low- and middle-income countries spend two per cent of GDP on education that does not lead to learning.

Christians in India are suffering a “dramatic upsurge” in attacks, a new report produced for Irish politicians warns. The report, Official India: On the side of the militants, was published last week by the Irish charity Church in Chains for the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence…The 57 “serious incidents of persecution” listed are a “representative sample”, the authors say, and are “almost certainly a gross understatement”. In the first half of 2016, the Evangelical Fellowship of India and All-India Christian Council recorded 410 incidents as in the whole of 2016. In 2014, it was 147.

A Government review of sharia in the UK has said that a “culture change” in Muslim communities is required for women’s civil rights to be acknowledged. The Independent Review into the Application of Sharia Law in England and Wales, chaired by Professor Mona Siddiqui and published on Thursday of last week, also recommended that marriage laws should be changed to ensure that civil marriages were conducted before, or at the same time as, Islamic weddings, as happened in the case of Christian or Jewish weddings in the UK.

Loneliness and mental illness are by far the commonest community issues being addressed by parish priests in the Church of England, a new survey suggests. The survey of 1094 incumbents of parishes around the C of E was conducted by the Mission and Public Affairs Council and the Church Urban Fund to inform the latest Church in Action report….More than three quarters (76 per cent) of all respondents reported that loneliness was a “significant” problem in their community last year: 18 per cent higher than in 2011.

The Polish Government was warned by the EU about its plan to introduce pro-life legislation, it was reported in January. Polish ministers are pressing ahead with plans to change the law to protect unborn children with disabilities from being aborted. The EU claims that the proposals represent a ‘serious breach of European values’.

Online porn is to blame for a record number of sex crimes by under-18s in Scotland, an addiction charity said in late 2017. A total of 407 minors were reported for rape, attempted rape, sexual assault or other sex crimes. This number included 48 people under the age of 16.

One in every four parents is worried about not having enough to eat, the results of a new poll published this week suggest. In a survey of 2032 adults this month, 23 per cent of parents of children under the age of 18, and 27 per cent of parents of primary-school-aged children, said that they had either skipped, or seen someone in their household skipping, meals…The poll was commissioned by the End Hunger UK coalition, which includes the Trussell Trust, Church Action on Poverty, and Oxfam.

According to Ofcom, 90 per cent of 12 to 15-year-olds stop to consider the truth of a story they come across online. Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, says this shows that young people are aware of the concept of fake news. They found that 99 per cent of these young people spend nearly 21 hours a week online, and 74 per cent have a social media profile.

Ofsted’s recently released 2016-17 annual report is critical of independent faith schools. The Ofsted rating system groups schools into four categories: 'outstanding’, ‘good’, ‘requires improvement’ and ‘inadequate’. According to the report, a third of independent Christian schools were marked as either ‘requires improvement’ or ‘inadequate’. One of the main reasons Ofsted cites is the failure to teach British values.

One in four female modern slavery survivors in the UK are pregnant when they escape from their captors, prompting urgent calls for the Government to better protect vulnerable victims in the aftermath of their ordeal. The main organisation supporting victims of modern slavery in London has revealed the majority of these women are routinely unable to access vital support with their pregnancy, with two thirds not receiving antenatal care until they are over seven months pregnant.

Nearly one in five people retiring in 2018 will be doing so in debt – owing £33,900 on average – a report suggests. Some 19% of people planning to retire in 2018 say they will be carrying some form of debt with them, with credit cards and mortgages the most likely sources of borrowing still left to pay off, Prudential found. Men are more likely to be expecting to retire in debt at 22% versus 16% of female retirees.
