Britons are turning to self-diagnosis kits to check their health, according to a new report by market analyst Mintel.
The report shows that sales of products, devices and tests for measuring such things as body fat have increased by almost 30% in the past 5 years.
Alexandra Richmond, senior consumer analyst at Mintel, says: ‘as a nation we are constantly bombarded with health warnings and are becoming more aware of the growing obesity problem.
This, combined with the fact that people are finding it increasingly difficult to get a doctors appointment, means they are choosing to go it alone when it comes to their health.

Earlier this month TV news carried details of research carried out for the Children’s Society. In it’s Good Childhood Inquiry, the society found that 61% of parents say they don’t get enough time to spend with their children, and almost half (48 per cent) said they’d put their career first, even if it adversely affected family time.
The vast majority of children surveyed (70 per cent) said the most important thing they wanted from their parent(s) wasn’t a bigger house or the latest must-have video game, it was love.

The general secretary of the Christian Medical Fellowship has criticised the decision by the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority to grant licences to scientists who want to use human-animal hybrid embryos in research. Dr Peter Saunders said that ‘researchers in Japan and the USA have now produced embryonic-like stem cells from human skin cells’, meaning that animal-human hybrids were not only unethical but also ‘simply unnecessary’

One million visitors have made their way to the BBC iPlayer website since the service was officially launched on Christmas Day. The iPlayer offers users the opportunity to either stream or download BBC programming on demand.
Streaming allows users to view the programmes from the previous 7 days instantly while those who download can keep the programmes for up to 30 days. According to the BBC, over 3.5 million programmes have been streamed or downloaded since the launch, an average of a quarter of a million per day.

The Government today ruled that broadcasting giant BSkyB must offload some of its controversial 17.9 per cent stake in ITV. Secretary of State for Business and Enterprise, John Hutton, has told Sky it must sell-down the shareholding to below 7.5 per cent and cannot take a seat on ITV’s board. The decision could cost Sky around £250 million.
