Whenever a children's CD comes through to be reviewed I am always sorely tempted to hand it over to my three year old so that he can tell me what he thinks and I will type it all up, do a spell check and leave it at that. After all, it really only matters what they think, right? I'm not so sure though, when there is so much good children's music widely available it is easy to make yourself think that every children's CD is going to be as good as Hillsong Kids for example. But to be fair there is a lot of rubbish out there, and why should our kids be expected to accept anything less than the best? So, on receiving this double CD of songs by Australia's Ms Plaut aimed specifically at an under-five audience, I did of course put it on straight away for my own son to have a listen, but I also made sure that I myself made a concerted effort to listen well. What makes this collection of songs special is the beautiful instruments used alongside vocals that are easy to understand, without being patronising. The instruments are played well and the overall quality is wonderful. The compilation kicks off with old favourite "Mr Cow" followed by "Jesus Light Of The World" and "Set My Feet". The well-played classical instrumentation makes "real" music accessible to a younger audience which is always going to be a good thing, however, if I have to listen to "God The Builder" many more times, I think I may cry. My three year old fully approves though!
