Back in the bad old days, before editorial self-censorship outlawed the use of pseudonyms in this august publication, Brian Tucker (RIP) commented, "There's no denying that Kim offers exceptionally pleasant pop gospel music." What was true of her last release could also sum up the 10 songs on 'By Faith', her second album for Warner Alliance. However, there's a thin line between "pleasant" and "nice", or even "bland", and it's hard not to come to the conclusion that what might be a very classy product, with solid production and lyrical content, is let down by Kim's rather limited vocal range - on the ballads she lacks the passion to sound convincing; and in the dance-pop numbers her voice just doesn't have the energy to give them a serious groove. The end result is an album of Amy Grant soundalike pop which doesn't quite seem to make the grade.
