It’s been over five years since ‘Obvious’, the last new pop offering from Messrs Marty Magehee, Kirk Sullivan, Andy Chrisman and Mark Harris, and whilst the two recent greatest hits albums would have garnered the boys some new fans, there’s nothing like fresh material to keep the old fans (myself included) happy. And I’m pleased to say that the wait has been worth it. ‘Visible’ is full of their trademark close harmonies, production is immaculate as usual (including three tracks produced by veteran muso Michael Omartian) and the songs themselves, most of which have a credit to Mark as co-writer, have a clear, unambiguous Christian message. My favourite on first hearing is “You Reign”, a waltzy hymn of praise that’s a definite radio hit; “Candle In The Rain”, one of the Omartian productions, is a slow piano-driven ballad that should appeal to inspirational stations everywhere; and the title track is a prayer to make the invisible God visible in our lives through the working of the Holy Spirit and through our commitment to him. Forget any accusations of artificiality and over-slickness, and snide comments about Christian boy bands; 4Him’s track record over the last 13 years has been consistently good and they can be relied upon to put the Christian message over clearly and effectively.
