Expectations will be understandably high from listeners familiar with Sapp, the self-proclaimed "preacher. . . who happens to sing". With seven previous albums under his belt, including one chart-topping single that has set the US ringtone market alight, 'Here I Am' has much to live up to. The live concert, recorded at Resurrection Life Church in Sapp's home state of Michigan, does not disappoint. The DVD provides exceptional sound quality and Sapp's vocal talent is undeniable. But this is also gospel worship at its best; from the backing singers to the percussionists to the audience, the entire recording is clearly intended to unite young and old alike in praise - and it's uplifting to see a wide range of ages in the audience. Sapp's passion for praise is evident and the relatively intimate venue provides a degree of intimacy that is the perfect backdrop to each track but the set would be equally commanding without the visuals. From the stomping and infectious ("I Came"; "Wait") to the reflective ("Comfort Zone"; "He Has His Hands On You") to the rousing ("Don't Count Me Out") this is classic Sapp; a powerful collection from one of the gospel industry's all-time greats guaranteed to please die-hard fans and newcomers alike.
