A reviewer elsewhere wrote recently "I hate and detest rap" and speculated about what rappers will be doing in twenty years time. Well, what for that matter will 99% of other recording artists be doing then? Anyone who can't accept rap is here to stay is like King Canute trying to turn back the tide. Much rap may well be sub-standard, jut as much of every other form of music is. Christian rap is usually quite decent though and DC Talk, since appearing at Greenbelt last August, have rightly become recognised as leaders in that field. Their secret is being more musical than the average rap - black gospel, funk and powerful soul singing are all part of the DCT sound, and some tracks on this latest offering are even a bit reminiscent of The Winans "It's Time". The classic "Heavenbound" from their first album attracted wide acclaim and 'Nu Thang' is full of similarly catchy tunes. You can play this to non-christians and non-rap fans alike, and though DC Talk may consider themselves Christian rappers, this is not so much a rap album as simply essential listening! If you don't ever buy another rap album, buy this one.
