Having never produced a lullabies album (I've tackled everything from heavy rock to acoustic roots but lilting melodies for baby's slumber times is something that has so far escaped me), I'd have thought the most difficult things were to avoid a sameness creeping in over the whole album, with no rhythm propelled up tempo tracks to aid variety and to avoid the arrangement predictability and cheap synth sounds which turns gentle balladry into cheese fest overkill. When I saw the sticker claiming this album was "the perfect gift for every new mom" I was momentarily concerned that this was going to be an exercise in OTT overkill. But Twila - surely one of the finest voices in the CCM firmament - and producer Derri Dougherty - who brought in consummate musos like Phil Keaggy, Phil Madeira and Chris Rodriguez -ensure a lilting blend of melody and saccharine-free words. Often quite beautiful and the equal of the other great lullabies album released recently featuring Jenny Legg and David Lyle Morris. So, indeed, if you're looking for a perfect gift for a new mum (sorry, mom) here's delicate worshipful music that features excellent musicianship and prayers to the Father as it woos the little darling asleep.
