I suppose there will be younger readers to whom the name Paul Field means little or nothing. In fact Paul is one of the most important figures in the growth of CCM in Britain in the 1970s. In the early days he fronted the harmony group Nutshell who for years were immensely popular in the European church circuit. He wrote a number of classic songs, his best-known "Thief In The Night" memorably recorded by Cliff Richard. When Nutshell broke up he recorded a number of solo albums. Gradually his profile slipped and if truth be told many of those albums exuded pop rock competence rather than the illusive gold of brilliance. But now Paul has stormed back with a devastating, stripped-down acoustic album which pundits are already proclaiming as his finest ever. By adopting a back to basics approach his songs, impassioned, deeply personal and illuminating, have a chance to breathe while his husky, constricted voice is very effective in conveying the eloquence of much of his lyrical imagery. 12 new songs plus three classic oldies (including "Thief In The Night") and the simple accompaniments, a piano here, a harmonica there, are absolutely right. A major songwriting talent given a new lease of creative life.
