'Beautiful Wounds' is the fourth in the worship series put out by Spring Hill Records. The CD is in an enhanced format, carrying interactive content such as chords and music for all the songs profiled on the record. To say that this collection is much like any other "new song" taster is to say this - it's a bit hit and miss, as Spring Hills' vocalists gamely yet skilfully tackle the creations of others such as Rick Cua. For every soaring, gospel-tinged power pop delight such as opening "Revival" (featuring the vocal talents of Charity Von) there are two paint-by-numbers worship ballads. There's more than a hint of Backstreet Boys production values about "Immeasurable" for example. Despite being grouped under the title track "Beautiful Wounds" there is no obvious thread weaving the collection of songs together. It's hard to say just where this album is pitched and who for - the enhanced content suggests a worship resource for the Church; the polished production, session musicianship and lofty arrangements suggest a performance level unattainable by most local worship teams. The best corporate worship songs capture something eternal in a fresh way which is inspiring and accessible to a large number of people. The album is enjoyable enough, but in truth there are few congregational worship gems here.
