Here’s a value for money, double CD compilation which will surely get all devotees of the old gospel sound travelling to their local HMV and searching in the blues/gospel racks. 39 tracks largely culled from the ‘50s and ‘60s from a wide range of artists with international ambassadors of gospel rubbing shoulders with obscure local acts. Just grab some of the names on offer here: the Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi, Al Green, Sensational Nightingales, Little Richard, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Dixie Hummingbirds, Soul Stirrers, the Mighty Clouds Of Joy. This is gut-wrenching, spirit-enriching, REAL soul music. It could be said this review is less than impartial (I compiled the album!). But one listen will convince gospel devotees, this is the real deal.
