A companion to the 2007 'Gotta Have Gospel Gold' double CD, this DVD features 70 minutes/13 performances by singers from America's best selling (predominantly) black gospel mainstream. The artist list includes Byron Cage, Fred Hammond, Israel & New Breed, Mary Mary, Donny McClurkin and Martha Munizzi. Three quarters of the performances are live concert recordings with bucket loads of musician and audience energy, and most feature uptempo, rousing songs of worship. In contrast Joann Rosario does a fine soulful ballad and Mary Mary slot into a nice Prince groove with the mimed video for "I Sing". On the down side, there are a few examples of songs where the simple repetition of a phrase makes quite tedious listening and a couple of alarming examples of role model singers who appear to be dangerously overweight. Overall though, there's still a lot of infectious rhythm going down.
