Though one could object to the overblown claim on the cover "the world's top gospel artists and songs," this is still a useful double CD compilation. Disc 1, titled 'Then', offers 14 oldies ranging from the searing neo-soul of Kirk Franklin & Jill Scott on "Kingdom Come" to the sanctified jazz of Kirk Whalum & Jonathan Butler with "Falling In Love With Jesus" and even a step back to the old male quartet sound with Lee Williams & The Spiritual QCs with "Good Times". Disc 2, 'Now', is less strong with some acts being pushed hard by the companies involved who've still to make it in the marketplace and those who HAVE broken through usually being the most attention-grabbing. In the latter category Israel & New Breed, Tonex and that awesome blue-eyed gospel diva Martha Munizzi all show that contemporary gospel is well and thriving. If you've yet to catch up on what is happening in gospel in the last few years this compilation is a good place to start.
