Reviewed by Stephen Adams This latest Gotee release appears to be a companion to the CD release of the same name, showcasing the music videos of many of the same acts as the CD. A notable point appears to be that despite the varying quality of Christian hip-hop over the years, the scene currently excels in the realm of quality music videos. In truth, there is not one video here that, given the right push (and an unbiased mainstream media), would not be played on stations like MTV, MTV Base, Channel U, etc. Both underground and established acts are well represented here, with artists like Mars Ill, LA Symphony, Pigeon John and Ill Harmonics featured alongside the likes of John Reuben, T-Bone, Grits and KJ-52. Standout videos include the gritty, almost early-mid '90s feel of Pigeon John's video for "Life Goes On". Cross Movement bring a polished, yet still very street feel to "When I Flow (It's Gospel)", picturing the group bringing the Gospel to basketball courts, the studio, the subways and even the internet. Clever, fast-moving editing makes "Breathe Slow" by Mars Ill a highlight, as it depicts a day in the life of the crew from buying records to performing on stage, while "Move" translates the zany energy of John Reuben superbly from CD into moving image. Plus a 15-minute interview with DJ Maj of Gotee Records gives a superb insight into the art of deejaying. So, if you're looking for further proof that the Christian hip-hop scene has moved in leaps and bounds, this DVD is a good starting point.
