Recorded at Rocketown in Nashville in July 2004, his 10 track CD is a mix of some legendary names in gospel music (The Blind Boys Of Alabama, The Mighty Clouds Of Joy), mixed in with some lesser lights, and a few people whose names I don't recognise, and whilst it's well recorded, it's a bit of a curate's egg, good in parts. It's only to be expected that the Blind Boys and the Mighty Clouds will give us some truly gritty stuff in the true tradition of the Golden Age of Gospel, and they don't disappoint. I don't think, however, that many of the heirs apparent in the gospel diva stakes, people like Vicki Yohe and Darlene McCoy, have all the necessary passion, it's a bit formulaic, church-wrecking by numbers. At least the good bits outweigh the bad.
