From the opening cut, a screaming bottleneck blues version of "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" this album had me in its gutsy grip. Acapella gospel, country blues, acoustic dobro driven dirges and R&B all feature heavily on the album, but this is no mild mannered white boy half baked attempt at gospel anthems... This here's the real thang. Yep, "Amazing Grace" is given an intro you won't forget... references to slavery and persecution of the American black community are charged with the emotion and passion that these songs rarely get...outstanding stuff. Just in case you are in any doubt where rock 'n' roll really came from, just listen to this CD. Before Elvis and the Beatles, there was indeed gospel....and it was good. This makes our post modern pop seem lightweight and second rate, you will have guessed by now that purchase is necessary, and full marks are required.
