This is a seven song selection with an agenda. "What do you believe?" hollers Grits, guesting on Jennifer Knapps' opening track "Believe". It's an unashamed statement of intent: the purpose of "Explicit Christian Lyics" is to make people consider the greater matters of life. Subtle it isn't. Paul Wright's "Life After Death", with its interplay of piano and scratching, is perhaps a little too explicit: "What's going to happen when you die?/Is there anything else?" It's all a bit too obvious at times. This is a carefully planned CD though. It takes seven songs, in seven different genres, and tells a coherent story throughout. It's a neat trick. Having taken in Jonah 33's Nickelback stylings and Grand Incredible's ska offer of "Salvation", it wraps up with "I'm Guilty" from KJ 52. It's an interesting experiment - a sort of tract in audio. I do wonder, however, just how quick your average young person will be to pick up a CD called 'Explicit Christian Lyrics'.
