Historians will no doubt be fascinated with the eight recordings here by Calvin P Dixon (otherwise credited Black Billy Sunday) as the Rev Dixon was the first black preacher to have his sermonettes released to the public. Unfortunately, Dixon's dignified and measured preaching has little of the fire normally associated with African American preachers or indeed the original white Billy Sunday. It's other preachers here who demonstrate a more authentic approach to their art. Rev Mose Doolittle offers "Testimonial Meeting" complete with a lining out hymn and a sister chanting her testimony while the Rev J F Forrest preaches in the hoarse, straining style with the reverend offering one of the most complete aural representations of black Baptist ritual when he goes through "Funeral Sermon", "Sermon Of Baptism", "Prayer Meeting And Sermon" and "Revival For Sinners". Also of interest are the rare recordings by Rev Wm McKinley Dawkins which turn out to be sung hymns (including "His Eye Is On The Sparrow") accompanied by a pianist.
