Jet Star seems to have put together a good mix of both reggae gospel and secular artists for the fourth volume of their 'Reggae Sunday Service' compilations. Well known gospel singers like Carlene Davis and Pamela Maynard are among a wealth of secular reggae artists such as Harry Todler, Owen Grey, Beenie Man and the ever conscious Luciano. As with all compilations there are tracks and styles you'll prefer over others. Things ticked over in a safe kind of way until Donna Marie's take on "Master Plan" sucks you back in time with an early Island Records style production. Owen Grey and guests bring a smile to the face with their jovial bop sounding version of "It's Me Oh Lord", whereas Luciano's "Sweep Over My Soul" has just got that great reverb-laced dub sound from way back when. Those tracks aside, I found some of this compilation rather cringe-worthy though all was made well by the good doctor Beenie Man instructing us in the opening of his track "Gospel Times" to, ahem, "Shake your bootie in the name of the Lord".
