It's been 25 years since I've seen this magnificent documentary. To quote from the book (not a CD booklet but a handsomely bound book) which accompanies this luxuriously presented package, "Say Amen, Somebody is an epochal film (which) documents the Golden Age of Gospel Music in its dying hour and pays homage to the music's pioneers in their extreme old age - Willie Mae Ford Smith, Thomas A Dorsey and Sallie Martin." Director George T Nierenberg and his film crew did an amazing job following Willie Mae Ford Smith and Thomas A Dorsey seemingly everywhere they went and getting intimate and revealing footage as well as recording amazing music as these veterans show that even in old age they could still electrify a congregation. We learn first hand about the early days of gospel, its development and the harsh challenges that faced its pioneers while the St Louis tribute to Mother Smith complete with abandoned performances from the Barrett Sisters and the O'Neal Twins is absolutely thrilling. At the time of its cinema release Time magazine wrote, "Say Amen, Somebody is a feel good inspirational movie for all to enjoy. Full of humanity, tenderness and grace this would make even a tone deaf atheist say amen." If you are serious about the roots of gospel music this classic documentary is essential viewing and with newly recorded director's commentary, photo essay and the hymn book-style packaging this reissue has now been given the respect it deserves.
