The Songs of Fellowship collection is described in the sleevenotes as “a series of albums, filled with a selection of rich and varied worship from writers past and present.” Classic hymns like “Praise My Soul, The King Of Heaven” and “I Know Not Why God’s Wondrous Grace” sit alongside more recent material from the likes of David Ruis and Kevin Prosch. Most of the 20 songs here are quiet, reflective numbers which would work well in a small group setting or for personal devotional use. Whilst there is no mention of the musicians involved, the vocal talents of Noel Richards and Stuart Townend can be clearly heard. There are a few noteworthy tracks including the prayerful “Release Your Power” and the beautiful Maggi Dawn-penned “Come Lord Jesus, Come” but I was disappointed with the album as a whole. More attention could have been paid to the running order and the mix of styles detracts from the songs themselves. Some very dated recordings and cheesy backing vocals make for uncomfortable listening at points but the rousing “When I Survey” is a great way to close proceedings. Overall, it’s a fair bet that if you enjoyed the other albums in the series then this will be to your liking but it has little to appeal to the casual buyer.
