Surprise, surprise - this album is taken from recordings of the Soul Survivor festivals in 1996! What you might not have already guessed is the artists involved unless you were there. Matt Redman, Delirious? and David Ruis make this an "all-star" collection and the mix of the album reflects the more concert-like atmosphere of Cutting Edge and its ilk. I am of the (rare?) persuasion that prefers the focus of a singer rather than congregational worship, so this is welcome. I have to say that for these ears, used as they are to rock 'n' roll, most Christian corporate worship lacks a bit of oomph in the vocal department - if it is still true that most Christians are females (I still have my suspicions it was just a myth to attract us males!!!), I guess that may be the reason for a sound lacking in bass. Musically this collection takes in the roots-influenced sounds a la Kevin Prosch (several KP covers included), and the '80's U2-ish sound of Delirious?. Only two Martin Smith songs here, and they're from 1994, so anyone after a foretaste of Delirious?'s next release will be disappointed. Musicians are a little sloppy at the odd point - most noticeably for me on the excellent "I Will Do Anything For This Love" - but only the most technically pedantic will mind. One for those who still aren't too convinced by this 'Renewal of Worship' business.
