I’ve long been a lover of 19th century spirituals – that mournfully beautiful form of Christian music that rose up from the slave community. And even though I can understand not everyone caring for the classically trained vocalist versions that have kept this rich repertoire performed this past 100 years, I’ve always felt that spirituals deserved greater respect than sometimes shown them by the African American community. So maybe this album will play a part in re-establishing their place in the consciousness of today’s black Christians though I’d expect that the arrangements here of timeless gems like “Motherless Child”, “Steal Away”, “Nobody Know The Trouble I’ve Seen” and “Deep River” done as they are by Scott V Smith by “a 54-piece orchestra in a style reminiscent of George Gershwin” will ensure this album’s acceptance in the white “inspirational” marketplace rather than the black. Which is a shame considering the African American vocalists here – Larnelle Harris, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr and Wintley Phipps – all show impressive vocal chops despite the fussily theatrical arrangements. And that’s a double shame as the well researched sleeve of African American history is a fascinating read.
