Some people have suggested that Kingsway's Best. . . Ever series has run its course. But though Kingsway aren't going to see the huge sales they enjoyed with the first couple of volumes of this series, the folk at Eastbourne will continue to release three CD set variants in the series as long as Joe Public buys them. This latest volume features 50 instrumental renditions of worship songs made popular in the last 20 years or so. Unfortunately, many of the un-credited instrumentals here are decidedly formulaic and seem to follow a clear formula of tried and trusted patterns. If the song is gentle, use a flute, if it is a little livelier get the trumpet out. Something in the middle, then the tune played on an acoustic guitar fills in nicely. That being said you cannot fault the songs that so many hold dear. "All Heaven Declares", "What A Faithful God", "Isn't He Beautiful", I doubt that there will be many songs on this album that you do not already know well. Songs like "Beautiful Saviour" are competently played and the balance of flute and piano work well. "Be Thou My Vision" and "When I Survey" both have a pleasing Celtic feel with effective use of mandolin and penny whistle. But overall, this is a compilation you can afford to miss unless you are a Best. . . Ever completist.
