After seeing a comparison to the brilliant secular band At The Gates I was particularly looking forward to this EP. Winter Solstice are a melodic metalcore band and while there are only four tracks on show here, it's enough to show some great potential. Borrowing elements from the hardcore scene and the melodic death/thrash scene, the overall sound is most impressive. The guitarists not only provide a very heavy sound but also create some incredible harmonies and the drumming only adds to the aggression. The vocals are spewed forth with real intensity and for me that makes an enjoyable listening experience. Yes, this is metalcore the way it's meant to be played. "Malice In Wonderland" is the track that best shows the brutality that this record contains. The band are currently touring the US in support of this EP and they have also officially signed to Metal Blade Records for their next full length release so expect to hear plenty about this band in future.
