Comment: The first time I listened to Ben Okafor was in 2004 when he performed in my local church in Lagos Nigeria on the invitation of Dr. Tony Rapu who also shares same 'social gospel values' like Ben. As a child, I was angry with those who ahd taken our forebears into slavery;I was angry with the Nigerian government for the war atrocities they committed in the Ibo communities during the Biafran War. I was drawn to the cause of justice and freedom, and equity and reggae music and reggae acts imbided this into me as a growing child. But Ben's music was different...it included the "God factor' which made it sink deeper than all other reggae music that I listened to...and to my joy and pride, I found that he hailed from Nigeria and shared 'tribal blood' with me, who grew up in Iboland like him.His music takes me on a trip into a kind of consciousness that is deeper than anything I could elicit on my own.His music gets me thinking, his depth untangles my soul from lethargic strands, and much more, it brings God's love, justice and compassionate heart to my consciousness. I love Ben. I respect Ben.He's a true mentor of mine. He's not just a Big Brother to me in Disapora, he's 'nwannem nwoke' indeed!...and I feel him around me eachtime his voice bellows around me through his songs!!
