Comment: I had the opportunity to play with Danny in the early 90's. It was a band thrown together to back him for 2 sets at a gospel music festival in South Carolina. LuLu Roman was the headliner and Danny was either her manager or road manager at the time if memory serves. After the only rehearsal the night before the festival, I went to my youth minister's house and was excitedly telling him and his wife of the rehearsal and so on (I was 19 or 20 at the time), this being the first time I had gotten a call from out of the blue from someone I didn't know because they'd heard I was a GOOD drummer. after I'd babbled for a few minutes my youth pastor stopped me and said, "What did you say this guy's name was?". "Danny Taylor", I replied. He and his wife looked at each other with cheshire cat grins and then back at me and asked, "Do you have any idea who you just played with?" to which I responded, "no." They went on to fill me on how instrumental he was to Christian music. The next day before we played, after the first set and any other time I could, I would talk to Danny and ask him about the early days of Jesus music. He was so gracious to humor me with stories and to encourage me as a Christian and a musician. He taught me and challenged me so much in that brief time. I remember two things vividly about the music set: a song called "Never Could Leave Well Enough Alone" that had a sort of calypso beat and a clever play on words and another song with an uptempo kind of train track country shuffle. I remember those because I'd never been asked to play those kinds of beats before and had to learn them on the spot. I was also struck with how un-CCM his music was stylistically. Very eclectic range of influences. I am so sorry to hear he passed away and wish I had thought to look him up earlier, but will always be thankful for the time I got to spend with him, what he taught me and that his legacy will continue to reach people for years to come.
