Article Title: Somerset Council Bans Would-Be Foster Carers Over Views On Child Discipline

Comment: I couldn't agree more. I have to say that I am a young mother living with my son and who is soon to be his father through adoption. When he and I first met, I had just fallen pregnant and we had very different views on discipling a child. I was smacked as a child, as was he, and though it never did either of us any harm, I am completely against and I made clear to him when we moved in together that I wouldn't tolerate it and if he so much as gave him a light slap on the bum, I would call it off. I too am pleased to see that local council's are taking responsibility. There is a lot of critism towards the entire foster are system however, surely there is some positive here in the fact that the local authority are minimising any potential risks of endangering children. This is not to say that the above mentioned family would have necessarily done so, but precautions have to be taken. After all, how to teach a child not to smack other children? Smack them and tell them it's wrong?
