Comment: Mrs Alexander was the wife of the Bishop of Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The city was established during the mid 1600's by the London Company of Drapers. A large wall surrounded it for protection,and it is still there to day ,and of great interest to tourists. I understand the thought of this lovely hymn came to her as she compared this city with Jerusalem. Hymns which magnify the Crosswork of Our Lord Jesus Christ stay in the memory for all time
