It seems almost bordering on cheekiness to be attempting to review this CD, the latest offering from the multi-Grammy winning Chanticleer choir from the US. Here they go back to their gospel roots and give us 11 superb all-new arrangements (by musical director Jeremy Jennings) of spirituals and traditional gospel music with guest soloist on many of the tracks, Bishop Yvette A Flunder. Bishop Flunder is reported to be one of the most active ministers working with the poor and needy in San Francisco. She also has an awesome gospel voice and blends in well here with the all-male 12 member Chanticleer, whose own considerable voices range from counter tenor to bass. Founded in 1978 to revive sacred Renaissance vocal music, there not being many cathedral choirs across the Atlantic, Chanticleer is now claimed to be, according to the sleevenotes, "the only independent full-time classical vocal ensemble in the United States." Whether they are or not, they are the tops by any criteria, and I gladly join with every other critic in acclaiming their talents. If you have any interest in gospel/spirituals, or even just enjoy listening to fabulous voices blended together, put this CD on your "to buy" list.
