I'll leave it to other reviews to describe Derek's noble pedigree (Caedmon's Call, etc); what is clear is that he is a very good songwriter able to put into music some of the parts of the human experience that are hard for the rest of us to pin down, or even on occasion to notice. This is a live collection and will not be a great surprise musically for those who have followed Derek who here eschews pop embellishments in favour of rootsy man-and-guitar intimacy. To add musical variety Derek is joined by a hand picked band willing and able to rock when required. The visuals (number of cameras, angles effects and so on) are kept simple to give a feel of how it was on the night, in this particular small venue and so not overwhelming the music (which is how it should be in a live performance DVD). The songs here take on big issues like poverty and political repression with passion and no little insight. I should also add that the DVD includes interview footage and a photo gallery, all giving a rounded view of where he is at. Derek says, "I've found that often success looks more like failure, riches more like poverty and real life often feels more like death. The Christian life is very literally the process by which we are killed." Interesting.
