Al Johnson once enjoyed R&B hits fronting the Unifics while "I'm Back For More" that had Al duetting with Jean Carne back in 1980 is considered by some a soul classic. Later Johnson sang bvs for acts like Roberta Flack and Pebo Bryson. But alongside his mainstream career Al demonstrated his Christian faith contributing vocals for Jeff Majors 'Sacred' series. He also recorded many demo vocals for songwriter, producer and friend Derrick Doc Pearson. These vocals now form the basis of this hugely enjoyable and unexpected release. Al went to be with the Lord in 2013 and these recordings are a fitting tribute to a singer who despite his R&B success remained largely unknown to the gospel community. Most of the tracks here are modern R&B gospel with slinky grooves and clever programming while the more hymn-like "I Cry Unto Thee" shows that his rich, soulful tenor was particularly effective when emoting songs of faith and devotion. My particular favourite is "God Is My Friend" with a delicious groove and smooth harmonies although many of the songs, all written by Derrick Pearson, deserve to be heard on gospel radio, and with their crisp, tight production, more adventurous R&B stations as well.
