Three tracks aren't really enough for a full assessment of the talents of Texas-based singer Devyn, but her debut EP certainly makes some good first impressions. Fusing Shania Twain-like country rock, synth pop, and a perhaps dash of punk rock, Devyn opens with "How Great You Are" before pulling back the pace for "Next Chapter", a power ballad with something of a 1980s feel and structure - by way of comparison, T'Pau's "China In Your Hand" springs to mind. The title cut is more akin to the opener in tempo and style, with a guitar riff that's rather reminiscent of the Friends theme tune, it exudes confidence, joie de vivre and the reassurance of knowing and experiencing God's love after difficult times in life: "Life is sweeter than a summer day, yeah/Bigger than the Milky Way/Oh, it doesn't matter what you say/This world just keeps on turning/Let's stay stronger than a bullet train./Cooler than an August rainstorm/When you overcome the pain/Then you will find love's all around you." Production is top-notch too, with Grammy Award-winners Michael and Ron Morales pulling everything together nicely. Surely a full album from Devyn isn't far away.
