Reviewed by Brian Lincoln The paragraph on the CD rear cover extolling the virtues of the work begins thus: "Classical guitar virtuoso Gary Lowry presents his own unique arrangements of Handel's Messiah, one of the great Christian classical musical masterpieces. Blending four guitars, he performs the entire orchestral score on this superb quality classical instrumental recording". And he does too! From the 'Overture' to the 'Hallelujah' it's a real treat, especially for the classical guitar enthusiast. On first hearing, the whole thing sounds a little thin, particularly when we're used to full choral and orchestral performances of the work. But, like most good things it grows on you, and makes extremely restful and meditational listening. For full appreciation, this is a work best heard when alone. No one track stands out exceptionally, but all lead up naturally to the final 'Hallelujah'.! Gary was first introduced to Handel by his father Bob, when he was eight years old and he has this to say about his work "This project is George Frederic Handel note for note. 'Messiah' is one of my favourite works because it is the complete account of Jesus Christ told entirely through Scripture. I sincerely hope that after hearing these selections you have a greater appreciation for this divine work, written by a truly inspired composer, glorifying a Wonderful, Almighty Saviour, Jesus Christ - the Messiah!" Couldn't agree more Gary!
