The blend of two Californian guys (guitarist Charles Normal and drummer Jason Carter) with two Norwegian girls (vocalist Kristin Blix and bassist Silver Sorensen) results in indie rock with considerable pedigree. Normal is of course better known as Larry Norman's brother and sometimes musical collaborator. The guys came from recording and touring with Pixies' frontman Frank Black to create this ironic look at the world through a smoky haze and dark glasses. The mix of indie rock riffs with electronic effects is pleasing and where Garbage left off, Guards Of Metropolis have picked up the script. Check out the video for "Perfect World" on YouTube, which has the lead singer Kristin Blix as a slightly Gothic barbie doll in an animated universe of burning tower blocks. Her barbed witticisms are sharp, eg, I don't like you just "The Way You Are". I won't try to explain what "Exhole" is about, with its references to Jerry Springer. There are even tinges of Debbie Harry and Blondie in the riffs and strong female persona. It's great that this intriguing set is belatedly available through Sold Rock.
