Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was the most important German composer of his generation, a pupil of Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice and later of Monteverdi. He was employed by several royal courts in Northern Europe and wrote both sacred and secular music. In this re-issue René Jacobs invites you to rediscover the "Christmas Story", probably the most popular work of Schütz. Written in his twilight years "Weihnnachts-Historie" combines Lutheran fervour with Italianate recitative in a setting that is austere in its overall manner, with clear instrumental accompaniment, and yet brings out the beauty and vigour of the numbers depicting the different groups, in turn the angels, the shepherds and the wise men. This title was released for the first time in 1990 to critical acclaim and it is good to have it available at budget price. It does have to be said that the writing was of its time and place and that Schütz, accomplished composer though he was, cannot stand comparison with Bach. There are moments of musical brilliance when the polyphony takes off but there is also - at least to these ears - too much recitative. Schütz was breaking new ground here by using German texts not Latin but for those of us who do not understand German it is hard going. This is, of course, my problem not his although the listening experience would be easier if a translation was provided. The budget label Musique D'Abord specialises in reviving neglected treasures at a bargain price and while this version of the "Christmas Story" would not top my personal Christmas list it is still worth hearing.
