Inigo Byrne is (or was at the time of the release of this album) a 13 year old ex-Chester Cathedral chorister, and this contains an eclectic, not to say bewildering, mix of material, so much so, that I would really hesitate to describe it as a "Christian" album in the true sense of the phrase. Mainstream stuff from Lennon & McCartney, Rice & Lloyd Webber, Tears For Fears, Queen, Labi Siffre, Lionel Bart, Enya and Stevie Wonder rub shoulders with more traditional sacred songs such as "Jerusalem" and "Morning Has Broken", there's a chunk of Mozart for good measure, and Fairport Convention also get in on the act. The album has an ethereal feel, at times almost Celtic, but Inigo's voice is really nothing special, which makes the unbelievably effusive and OTT press release so difficult to understand. Apparently, Bruce Forsyth called him "a wonderful little singer"; the Daily Express referred to him as "the next Aled Jones"; and some have even compared him to Carreras and Pavarotti, which is patently absurd. The tricksy arrangements are all very well (what Stevie Wonder would make of a harp and strings arrangement of "If It's Magic" is anybody's guess, and those who remember the film Oliver! and the superb set piece staging of "Who Will Buy", will be appalled to hear how it's been butchered), but the bottom line is all about the vocals, and they don't cut it. Aled at 13 was on a totally different planet when it came to talent, delivery and range, so the people who are trying to hype up this lad into something he's not should pause and reflect before any permanent damage is done.

What a fantastic album. Just bought it. Why has it not been played on the radio ?

I just received a copy of Inigo's CD and I love it. There is not one number I would pick as the best over the others. The whole album is superb. I like it so much I have listed Inigo on my web page with clips of some of his songs. I hope people water who appreciates music and hears the clips will buy the album.
Inigo keep up the good work.

I won't get on Kirk's case because my opinion rarely matches the critic's.
However, I found the cd enchanting. "Listen to the Voices" and "If It's Magic" are incredible, and I believe the version of "Across the Universe" is the best I've ever heard, even better (gulp) than the original.

How on earth can anyone say that "his voice is really nothing special" - It IS something special

I bought this album on the off chance I might like it along with a couple of others at HMV one lunchtime.

I was not disappointed. Superb vocals. Great track selection. Inovative arrangements.

Your reviewer clearly has little or no imagination or taste. But there again he is entitled to his view. What a shame he could not have at least been constructive.

Loved the album.

Is Trevor Kirk tone deaf?

I loved the album. The voice is extra ordinary - I wonder what it will sound like when it breaks. Any readers please let me know if you hear any new stuff when it happens.

I seemed to have stirred up a hornet's nest - I've read similar things in the past when I speak my mind about Gaither Homecoming Friends albums! Inigo's voice has a lot of developing to do - he's only 14 for heaven's sake! He needs nurturing and handling with sensitivity, otherwise he'll get burned out and do an Aled and quit at 16, and that would be a shame.

What an experience. Heard album played by a relative. The voice is just incredible. Had to buy it. Superb. Don't understand what planet the reviewer is from.

Who is this guy "Kirk" ? Has he any appreciation of artisitic creativity ?

This is a super album which breaks barriers. It is not everyone's cup of tea. However it is mine.

Mr. Kirk's review displays an insensitivity, ignorance and lack of artisitc feel which is breath taking. This album will be seen as being up amongst the greats in years to come. Everyone who has heard it in Toulose has been stunned by it's simplicity and beauty.
