Mark this release, the debut recording of rising star Jan Liebermann, because we will surely hear much more from him in the future. Born in 2005, Liebermann has already won his share of prizes and built a formidable live reputation. For example, in 2024 he performed all six of Bach's 'Trio Sonatas' from memory and the following year presented Dupre's 'Preludes et Fugues' also from memory. As someone once commented about a different musician: he plays all the right notes in the right order. In the programme under review Liebermann presents a varied selection of works from the core organ repertoire by Alfred Hollins, Maurice Dupre, JS Bach (arranged by Sigfried Karg-Elert), and Petr Eben. The recital was performed on the historic Henry Willis organ of Salisbury Cathedral. This was built in 1877 and in 2020 a comprehensive restoration by Harrison and Harrison was completed. As is usual in a Regent Records organ release there are pictures and a full spec in the CD booklet for those who like to know the details. For your reviewer, who cannot claim any expertise in the organ, this was an enjoyable listen and very well recorded thanks to producer/engineer Myles Eastwood. If you get the opportunity to hear and possibly see Jan Liebermann in action near to you, I would encourage you to do so. If you cannot wait then this release is a splendid introduction to what he can do as well as being a fine showcase for a great and historically significant instrument.
