Anyone looking for the next big thing in modern worship music should look no further, just take a listen to Jason Morant's debut album from Vertical Music. A youth worship leader in New Orleans, this 22-year-old is clearly pushing forward the genre taking influences from a wider pool of influences - not just the likes of Delirious and Matt Redman, but Travis, Fran Healey, Josh Rouse, Tree63, U2 and others. Sometimes lyrically simple, the lines are always delivered with passion, one moment fragile the next a full on cry to the heavens - the title track "Abandon" being a great example of this. The arrangements create an atmosphere that effortlessly leads the worshipper to abandon themselves and come in humble adoration before their God - and for that reason alone you should buy this album. Hang on for that 'hidden track' you won't be disappointed! Many comparisons can be drawn with other modern pop/rock artists and this is really the only downside to the album - it gives the whole thing a sense of familiarity and therefore does not stand out from the miriad of other pop/rock worship albums around at the moment. But really that's it, in every other way I only have great things to say about it...buy it, buy it...and keep an eye out for the next Jason Morant album!
