What a voice this man possesses! Definitely a voice to separate the gospel singing men from the soul singing boys, a baritone of such rich soulfulness and muscled manliness with its dazzling armoury of slides, growls, blue notes and gasps that it sounds great even when the material isn't top drawer. On occasions John's songs are little more than perfunctory 'trust the Lord' simplicities which can hardly wait to get to the vamp and John's vocal pyrotechnics. But there are still good moments here. "He Cares" has him improvising against the New Life Community Choir, "I Want To See Your Face" has a contemporary funk arrangement and could almost be commissioned during their Light Records era and the duet with Kelli Wells "I Love You Jesus" is a gospel ballad which grows on you with every play. Lyrics are simple and devotional and I predict a big sale for this one.
