Sir John Tavener is arguably the leading British composer of his generation although, of course, no longer writing in what could be described as a "British" idiom. He we have a "liturgical drama" in the "Orthodox Byzantine style" commissioned and performed by Chanticleer, an outstanding American vocal ensemble, in conjunction with the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston. The silence, the grief, the passion, the triumph of Holy Week are all depicted through beautiful music and a simple yet profound text, exquisitely performed.
