Kingsley Wray is a native of St Anne’s, Jamaica, and in his youth had quite a successful career as a singer, songwriter and DJ before relocating to London with his family in the 1990s. This three-track CD sampler is a foretaste of a full album coming up later this year and, if this is any guide, it should be worth hearing. According to his publicity, Kingsley does a lot of his songwriting on a London Transport number 36 bus, and he aims to write conscious reggae music – music celebrating God, love and peace. To these honkie ears, he’s also produced accessible reggae music, reminiscent of the excellent Temple Yard album that Gotee Records released in 1999, with clear lyrics, good tunes and a toe-tapping quality that makes the music very listenable; “Too Much Fighting” is particularly good. Roll on that full album!
