Upcoming Aussie singer/songwriter, Stu Larsen, is treading in the footsteps of young solo male singers like James Morrison or Paolo Nutini with this collection of mostly downbeat, acoustic tunes. Superficially, one might assume that 'Lies Will Keep You Out' was a.n.other secular album. Many songs explore love in its many forms - longed for, unrequited, shared, lost. However, belief is never far away, if subtly displayed. The verses on "Overthrown" are stitched together from Scripture Proverbs, while the chorus longs for an experience deeper than dry words. "Why?" ponders on the reasons the promises we make to each other mean so little in a modern world where marriage is a convenience rather than a bond. "Miracle" expresses utter dependence on the grace of God. However, Larsen does not shy away from the fact that life is not always conveniently rose-tinted but has its darker corners, filled with doubt and uncertainty. It's this honesty and authenticity in the softer moments like "Move On", "Empty Streets" and "No Longer Yours" lend credibility to the album's emotional highs. Overall this is a fine debut by a talented young artist and a must if you like your songs grounded and tinged with a tasteful melancholy.

Stu Larsen is truly a rare artist. His unique and quirky lyricism allows a non-threatening approach to sometimes intimidating situations. He has a remarkable ability to reach through the haze and pull out pure and beautiful truth, accompanying it with captivating music and simple, elegant arrangements.
A breath taking artist. I'll be buying this album asap.
