The reputation and popularity of the 1812 Overture will be the selling point for this album, but it is an indifferent performance by the Slovak Philharmonic, contrast in quality is almost tangible when you reach track four, "Slavonic Dance" by Dvorak and played by the Berlin Orchestra with a panache that knocks the other tracks into a cocked hat, as do the Brahms "Hungarian Dances". If you can afford CDs you will have the advantage of being able to programme it to play only tracks 4-6, and if the last three were the only pieces on the disc I would have given it a much, much higher rating.
