What you have here is a selection of Elvis' favourite gospel numbers recorded afresh by two of the Southern gospel groups he sang with. And it's a gem. Personally, it's a journey back to my childhood; my mother was a big Elvis fan and the songs and sounds from this album remind me very much of that era. But it is also an uplifting journey, as one cannot fail to be inspired by vibrant versions of songs like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Bosom Of Abraham" and "How Great Thou Art". I tell you, no one does harmonies quite like these guys! There is the expected softer and more reflective side too on songs like "Lead Me, Guide Me" and "Sweet Spirit". The only downside to this album is the inclusion of the song "Blue Christmas" which, although an Elvis number, is not a gospel song at all. I don't know whether this has been included to make the album more appealing to Elvis fans or not, but it doesn't work in this context. That aside though, this CD is still an excellent recreation of a bygone age.
