'Find Your Voice' brings to mind the old poem about "the little girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead" because when it's good it's very, very good but when it's bad it's. . . well, perhaps not horrid but perplexing and frustrating in equal measure. Timothy D And The Trogloxenes, hailing from the South West of England, are not the overly earnest prog-rock band which their surreal name might suggest. Rather, the trio occupy that folky-tinged acoustic pop niche so recently carved out by the likes of the Fratellis and the Hoosiers. However, the catchiness of many tunes on the album is marred by their vocal delivery. It's not clear which of the three members (or female guest singers) takes the lead on each track but two male voices dominate proceedings. Unfortunately, the singing style on tracks such as "Missing Halo" and "Pool Of Grace" grates somewhat. Seemingly aiming for "raw and bluesy" it edges too far into "sloppy and rough" for these ears - all the more pointed out by the perkiness of the other tracks. All in all, the proverbial curate's egg and a big disappointment from a record label as pioneeringly creative as Risen Records.

I've just come upon this review whilst searching for more information about this band. I also completely disagree with these review comments and score. This album is so unique in its composition and is such a beautiful mixture of fragile, soul-stirring songs, alongside heart filled, rootsy, retro rock compositions, one of my favourite Risen Records albums for sure. Sounds as fresh and as exciting in 2011 as it did at release (2007) - Seriously this album is fantastic in both its musical sensibility & spiritually creative fervour - I love it. Don't overlook it_ I don't think it could be improved. Therefore I give it my 10/10, indispensable, rating.

I completely agree with your comment Mr Maynard. This is a flippin rad album and for someone to say it is sloppy and rough is completely and utterly missing the point and quite frankly a load of rubbish! Also I'm not quite sure what they mean by comparing it to the fratellies or the hoosiers because it doesn't sound anything like them!!Seriously, they're not trying to be anybody- they are writing wicked music and praising God. A rad album made by rad people....go buy it!

If I am allowed to, I would wholeheartedly like to 100% disagree with your review. This Timothy D and the Trogloxenes release is my favourite on Risen Records - it is original, thought provoking and is indeed great! I think to call it 'sloppy and rough' is totally missing the point of what these guys are about, it isn't meant to sound 'tight and nice' - they have released an absolutely brilliant album and you've just gone and done the whole 'it doesn't sound how I would like it to sound so I'm going to diss it' -there is far too much 'normal' and 'nice' Christian music out there, we need much more authentic, raw, original and from the heart stuff just like this release. If anyone reads this, go out and buy Timothys album - it's sweet!
