Los Angeles-based Tommy Walker is a well-known gospel worship artist and songwriter with many of his songs being sung in churches all over the world, but the aim of this project is to "bring the generations back together again." Tommy uses soloists, a band, a small orchestra, backing vocalists and a massive all-age choir to present 14 tried and tested hymns in a culturally relevant way. I found the whole concept inspirational as it marries the profundity of the old hymnwriters with the excitement of today's gospel worship. The formula presents the original hymn but with exciting instrumental riffs, added choral middle eights and bridge passages. I loved it all but a few of my favourites are "Before The Throne" with catchy violin and guitar, the raw emotion of "It Is Well" and the interesting arrangement of "Immortal, Invisible" (three-time vocals over a four-time accompaniment).
